In our modern world, it is easy to get overwhelmed just trying to keep up with everything new. Osiris Indriya has made a video to discuss the value of tradition in the modern world, and why we should continue to look into the past for “treasure”. Enjoy the show, and find all the content transcribed below.

TRANSCRIPT (with minor edits):

WHY IS TRADITION IMPORTANT?

Finding treasure… IN THE PAST.

I have a question for you: Why is tradition important?

We live in a world where it seems like the tools for creation are everywhere. We have amazing cameras in our pockets. We have the ability to create music and video and all forms of media right in our laps and right in our pockets. And it seems like as soon as we think of something we can almost materialize it, and who knows, within just a few years that might be directly how things work. We think it, and it is.

But, I have a secret for you… That idea, that concept of “we think and so it becomes” has been around for a very long time. (CAPTION: “All that we are is a result of what we have thought” – Buddha) The tools have changed; they have more buttons and lights. But, the concept is the same. Our thoughts become our reality.

Part of what tradition does is… it offers insights from the lifetimes of many people before us who have already explored similar ideas, and can help us harness that concept and turn it into more powerful and practical results today.

I’ll give you an example: Imagine that you need electricity to power your new awesome device, and you have no source to plug it into. In fact, you have never had a source to plug into. You have an amazing device that can do everything you can imagine. It can literally create things out of nothing, but it needs power to run. So what do you do? Are you going to design a new power generator? You have to figure out how to make an engine, and build every tiny machined little piece, and put it all together in the right order, find the right fuel, source the right fuel. Test… and build… and test… and build… and you know what, probably fail many times along the way until finally we get something that kinda works. And we’re getting somewhere good. We generate a little bit of power, and we can power up that device and we can start creating things. But it is maybe not super reliable, and it’s not quite running at full power. Maybe it’s a little dim. It’s a little tough to use.

Now, all of that time we spent designing and creating a power generator to power our device could have been saved and spent just creating if we could have just plugged into a wall socket, right?

That is essentially what tradition and lineage are for us. (CAPTION: Lineage (n.): a group of individuals tracing decent from a common founder) It’s all of this information that comes from the past that people have used reliably and have refined for us through the ages, and brought it into the present for us to further work and refine.

So, with any tradition, there is a rich treasure of insights and information and especially tools that we can apply into our lives to make them better, to be able to create more effectively, and to be able to help others create more effectively. ‘Cause it is not just about us creating alone. We live in a big grand world with lots of other people in it. And, I know for me it is a lot more fun when we get to create together.

I hope this inspires you to look at the past with new eyes and to consider pursuing a tradition, understanding where the past has beautiful treasures to offer you.

Thank you for listening, and we you will come and visit us some time.
